Replacement of courts 3,4,5,6

The work to replace courts 3, 4, 5 & 6 started on Thursday 1st October and work is well under way with the removal of the old “astro” surface once this is completed the fencing will be replaced between courts 3-6 and 7-8.  The work will take between 6-8 weeks before the courts are useable for play.  This is dependent on the weather.

The works up to and including macadam surfacing would take about 4 weeks. Macadam curing is between 3 and 4 weeks.   The new courts will not be coloured after they are finished, as the weather at this time of year is not suitable for the colouring process. The colouring will be undertaken in the spring of next year, along with the re-colouring of courts 1, 2, 7 & 8.

We are also considering the option of replacing the stones with tarmac on the pathway between courts 7 & 8 and 3, 4, 5 & 6, we are waiting for prices from the contractors

Ladies Singels LAdder

Last year Wargrave Ladies entered the National Counties League ( Now AEGON Team Tennis) and topped Division 2 with an unbeaten record. This year, following promotion to Division 1, they finished the season in 3rd place, a tremendous achievement.   Congratulations to this years players Mem Aldridge, Stephanie Aston, Laura Bevan, Megan Cunningham, Janice Dobbin, Sue Gutierrez, Emma Towers, Pavla Hovorkova and Giorgia Cordani.   I am proud to be associated with you and look forward to next season with great anticipation.

So as to keep those “singles skills” in great shape over the Winter I have put together a Singles Ladder, details of which are on the notice board in the clubhouse. I am delighted to say we already have 15 participants. Anyone wishing to join please either give me a call, e-mail david@Cunninghams.uk.com or add your name to the bottom of the Ladder with telephone number and email and I will see that you are included in on the weekly updates.

With enough support it will be possible to put up a second team next season. Good Luck and have a great Winter of Tennis.

 CLUB BBQ - 31st July

Once again in spite of not having a 'proper' Clubhouse the members of the tennis Club rallied round and attended the Annual BBQ.  On Friday 31st July, luckily a lovely evening, warm sunshine, no wind, ideal weather.  The Club looked festive with bunting strung around and more than fifty members plus guests milling about enjoying themselves.  Although for catering purposes we had asked members to sign up there were plenty of extras who appeared to support the event on spec.  This did not matter a bit there was enough delicious food to go round - with two BBQs lit the air was soon full of wonderful cooking smells.  While some of the more energetic members played a few sets of tennis the rest started on the alcohol (it was bring your own bottle type evening) right away.  As the evening wore on and more and more people decided it was time to eat and drink the atmosphere was fantastic, this was helped by the great food provided by Janice Dobbin and Gwen Barrett, salads, potatoes etc. etc. and the puddings, fresh strawberries and cream plus a Andy Jones special!  All the food disappeared very quickly and not a scrap was left which made it much easier to clear away at the end!  The actual BBQing was done by Jeremy Dobbin and Dave Moore and very grateful the Club is to them for their hard work.

Our thanks to to Janice and Gwen also Sue Jones for organising the event once again.  The floodlights on Courts three and four were switched on later on in the evening so people stayed on well into the evening, in fact until we realised that we only had ten minutes to clear up before the lights automatically went out!  It was a very very successful event and thanks to the wonderful support of the membership and the hard work of the organisers an extremely enjoyable evening was had by all.

"Fire destroys tennis clubhouse" (12/4/09)

All tennis courts now use "Code Padlocks" - details have been sent to all members
PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB OVER THE FENCE

The Clubhouse was burnt down in the early hours of Saturday morning (12 April).  There is seemingly nothing left completely disappeared except the small wooden hut which was slightly apart.  The cause is still unknown and is being investigated.

The coded padlocks for all tennis courts are being used.    We will contact members informing them of the change and code to use.   Please do not make the code generally known in order to protect the playing facilities from unauthorized use or further vandalism.

Also, there are now net height gauges in every court or pair of courts, please hang these up on the internal fences after used.
