President's Tournament – 30th August 2010

Despite a week of rain and gales preceding the August Bank Holiday conditions were relatively benign for the 16 players who turned out to contest the annual President's Tournament .

In contrast to the American Tournaments earlier in the year, it was the ladies who outnumbered then men (but only just). This meant there had to be one pair of two ladies within the 8 pairs of mixed doubles. Undeterred the organisers drew the partners and then the players split into two group of 4 pairs. Each pair played 10 games against the other three pairs within their own group. The winning pair from each group then played a normal set for the final.

Group 1 produced a clear leading pair of Eilish MacBean & Tim Price. Group 2 was much closer however and at the end of the three preliminary matches Diana Seligman & Brian Curtis were tying with Annie Moore & Martin Seligman. Thus a tie break was required to determine who should go through to meet Eilish & Tim in the final. It was Annie and Martin who ran away with the tiebreak and stormed into the final.

Whilst the remaining players enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea prepared by the club Chairman Sheena Darke, Annie & Martin continued in good form and allowed their opponents no leeway. Despite a spirited resistance from Eilish & Tim, Annie & Martin romped home to a 6-0 victory.

John Coghlan,  the President of WLTC, presented the prizes and thanked everyone for turning up and making the afternoon a great success.

Annual BBQ & Finals Day – 24th July

Members enjoyed a fine BBQ evening in the late sunshine after the WLTC Club Tournament Finals.

The gourmet food was prepared by Janice Dobbin and Gwen Barret while Tournament Organiser Dave Smith struggled manfully to cook the food to Janice's exacting standard. Dave must have managed it as everything was consumed and as yet no reports of ill effects have been received.

The prizes for the various categories of the Annual Tournament were then presented by Club Chairman Sheena Darke (see HERE for full report on the finals) after which members were treated to a selection of delicious deserts.

The committee would like to thanks all those who helped make the day a memorable event.

Here are a selection of photos for you to peruse and hoepfully enjoy.

American Tournament – 31st May 2010

The sun did not shine (except for the photos at the end) on the second Bank Holiday American Tournament this May, but at least the rain held off and the wind was not a problem.

Once again there was a disappointing turnout from the ladies with the men outnumbering them by 14 to 4. This meant there were 9 pairs and these were split into a group of 4 (who played mixed doubles) and a group of 5 (who played mens doubles), with the pairs playing every other pair in their group. To ensure an equal number of games were played the group of  4 played 12 games per match and the group of 5 played 9 games per match with the ladies / left hand court players swapping partners halfway through each match. Thus everybody played 36 games.

The theory was that the two ladies and men with the highest number of games at the end of the group stage went through to the final however the ladies, having enjoyed their afternoon of tennis thus far, declined to play in the final and therefore it was played out between the 4 highest scoring men.

In a tense final over 8 games Tim and Mark (on the right) just overcame Gerry and Dave (on the left) in the last game  to come out on top and win a bottle of wine each.

Although a fun time was had by all the committee obviously needs to spend some time persuading more ladies to turn up for the President's Tournament on 30th August.

Don't forget the American Tournament on Bank Holiday Monday - 31st May at 14:00

American Tournament – 3rd May 2010

Bank Holiday Monday was a cold and blustery day with a chilling northerly wind blowing directly down the courts but this did not deter 14 hardy members from turning up to play in an American Tournament. The conditions though did seem to put off the ladies more than the men as only 4 braved the gusts which meant three men donned skirts (metaphorically) to create 7 pairs.

The 7 pairs were split into a group of 3 and a group of 4, with the pairs playing every other pair in their group. To ensure an equal number of games were played the group of 3 played 12 games per match and the group of 4 played 8 games per match with the ladies swapping partners halfway through each match. Thus everybody played 24 games. The two ladies and men with the highest number of games at the end of the group stage went through to the final.

There were two clear lady finalists, Sheena Darke and Angie Sandall,  after the group stage but 3 men tied on 16 games and had to play a tie break eliminator. In the end Tim Price lost out and Alexis Alexnader went through along with Alan Williamson.

A close fought final over 8 games saw Angie and Alexis come out on top and win a bottle of wine each.
